Since you're such a nice guy...

and since the most recent song had eight reviews compared to the single one for this (and the fact that I have this video) makes this a very easy choice to review.

First off, your ability to create atmosphere in your songs is amazing.

Always has been, I've been able to listen to your songs, close my eyes, and drift off.

I suppose the only real complaint I have with this song is the lack of a dominant lead. Granted, however, the video doesn't really let you have one.

The pad from the intro is well crafted, and the combination of the arp and kicks works very well. The snare (if that's what it is) also adds to the minimalist feel I get here.

Did I ever tell you that it was your music that convinced me to buy Reason?

In any case, this song is definitely one of the more awesome on NG.

So awesome, it's awesome in McBurger form. :D

Very nice.

I know the exact part that you're talking about. From the first dream, I knew this game had a gripping story.

While the piano is EPICALLY AWESOME, the choir... sounds too synthy. That's the ONLY bad part I can come up with this.

Well-layered percussion, nice use of delay effects, and a very nice, well-balanced sound.

I feel that you could have a little more fun with instrument placement and panning- but that's just me. Anyways. I'm impressed. Totally didn't expect this level of awesomeness from you.

Oh, yes. Awesomeness. For such, you recieve a McAwesomeBurger award. Enjoy.

True, the recording quality isn't awesome...

but it also ain't bad.

This has potential, but unfortunately is a bit repetitive without lyrics.

Something you want would be low, growly lyrics to fit with this- I think it'd be awesome.

Anyways, I love metal. I can't play the guitar, and while this isn't the most complicated, it shows that you're competent.

Is the drums drum machine or live drummer? What's your recording setup?

You could take this somewhere. :D

viviseration responds:

It's a drum machine. I'm still in the process of adding lyrics so i can get some good growls in it. All I'm using is a distortion pedal and adobe audition.

Boom tiss...

Awesome, but you need to run the kick (I think) through a highpass filter- it's giving off a little high-pitched ringing type of thing.

Either that or my headphones are dying/intentional ringing.

Nice, smooth mix. Not especially professional sounding, if I may quote Khuskan, "just a wee bit much verby verb."

I know it would probably compress the crap out of the low end, but there needs to be a more well-formed bassline/ low end on the kick.

It sounds a bit empty- I'm kind of surprised you managed to fit that kick into the mix.

The lead is awesome- all of them. Repetitive? It could be said that. No, but I'd rather say, it found something good, and stuck with it. No complaints from me there.

But the ending... Nav, why you got to be doing this to me? Why? :(

4'd and 7/10. Needs a bit o' work. :D

Nav responds:

Aww I see you didn't like it. First off, I don't hear that high pitched thing... And it would be a lowpass filter, not a highpass to remove it. Yeah, its confusing Highpass, lowcut, lowpass, highcut.

Too much reverb? There was very little reverb actually. Just on the hat and on the lead, I think.

Yeah, I think I could make the bassline better myself, but I have no idea how to get the bottom of the kick better. It'd probably sound nice on bigger speakers.

Thanks about the leads, all are 3xOsc :P About repetitiveness... this song was designed to work in a club sort of environment, so it needs to start and end with a kick, and it doesn't matter that its repetitive so much as it is... big? I'm drawing inspiration from big trance artists here, so... I dunno.

The ending is as it should be, or a DJ could never mix it. Tell me what you would've wanted the ending to be, and I'll cut a version that way.

Thanks for the review! :)

HAY RIG

WE HATE YOU >:(

Rig responds:

We hate you guys too >:(

So,,,

I've come to two conclusions.

Firstly, I hate you.

Second, the Nyran-Online guys have got to be lucky to have you on the project- guarantee they won't have any music issues.

An awesome piece that is to be expected... however, what kind of scene was this written for? A cinematic? Then, perfect. If it's one of the themes of the game, like one of the ones that plays as you're playing the game in the middle of a town, it has a few minor problems.

Notably, the fact, that you're too used to "epic" composition, and that this song has a very nice, smooth flow. However. The low strings, for example, in a few places give this song a sound that one might not find exactly desirable for the placement- like I said, possibly "too epic." I never thought that I would find that to be a problem with any of your songs.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that this song sounds torn between two directions- epic music for movies, and a slow, calming town theme. It's good at both, however, excels at neither. You need a little bit of work on the non-epic pieces- from what I can tell by your history of works, your epic pieces are right on, the writing is impeccable. However. Your non-epic pieces suffer from slight instrumentation choice problems and a few small writing problems.

However, as always, one of your saving graces is the amazing sound quality your massive sample banks avail you to- but the writing needs just a wee bit of work.

I'm sure you'll manage to bring this style up to the level of awesomeness that I've come to expect from you.

MaestroRage responds:

MaestroRage: Why don't you ever call? :'(

Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you with the low strings. I quite liked them. They gave it a warm fuzzly feeling to me. But I guess that's all in a matter of another's opinion. Like they say, opinions are like butts: everyone has one, and they all stink.

Thank you very much for at least liking some parts though! =3 We appreciate your honesty and will work harder next time!
With love,
Lady Arsenic <3

MaestroRage: Gawd I hate you...

Since you asked...

It's chill.

Chillfully awesome.

Like a McSmoothie. Now I'll have to break out my copy of Wusik and see what it can do...

FUCKING RIG.

Rig responds:

I HAVE CONTROL OF YOU NOW >:D

Hehehe. Old school. Teh rock.

Of course, the sound quality isn't awesome- it wasn't meant to be. The song's perfect for that.

The guitar is skillfully played- your friend has solid guitar skills.

The repetitive 8-bitty sound in the background, while it fits, could deal with a tiny bit more variation.

Could be a bossbattle. No, I take it back. Totally would be a boss battle.

A bit of panning effects would be nice instead of having everything centered though.

My two cents, and thanks for the review you left me earlier. :D

midimachine responds:

The guitar is double-tracked and panned hard left and right, but I think you're correct in saying that the stereo imaging is a bit bland. Thank you :)

WHOOO

Like the way it starts, slightly menacing, but the percussion it goes into doesn't seem quite right. It would have been awesome had it gone into a little glitchy drums- pauses for the piano, and then goes full blast after the piano where the pad comes back in.

IDM is never a bad idea. :D

Nice synth at the end there.

All in all, it's a fairly solid song. Nothing really stands out, but it ain't bad.

FIVED 8/10'd.

WritersBlock responds:

Thank yee. Yeah, I know there's nothing outstanding here, I should try and fix that, if I'm not too lazy, lol. The drums worked their way into something stronger before I decided to ditch the second half, so that screwed it up a bit, so yeah, I might mess about with the drums a bit.

Thx for the 5. Still below 3 though >:(
